The
Kogi State House of Assembly has tasked the state government to take a
cue from Osun state and initiate its own school feeding programme for
Primary School Pupils across the state.
The
resolution of the House came on the heels of a motion moved on Tuesday
by Member representing Yagba West, Barr Oluwatoyin Lawal and was
seconded by Hon. Prince Kolawole Mathew of Kabba Bunu Constituency with
an additional prayer that the programme be captured in the 2017 budget.
Before the resolution, the motion had different reactions from the members of the House.
While supporting the motion, Hon. Pedro Obaro of Mopamuro advised that a means of checking it abuse be put in place.
However,
Hon. Linus Ojochenemi of Olamaboro frowned at the timing, saying that
it will add more burden on the State if implemented now, but suggested
that it should take effect in 2017.
Hon. Sunday
Shigaba of Bassa Constituency in his contribution to the Motion
emphasized more on restructuring of the Primary School system before
delving into such programme. He suggested that critical attention be
paid to restructuring and reorganization of the primary school system by
the government, having said the current situation is nothing to write
about.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Umar Ahmed Imam,
having listened to several views cited an instance of how they went
through primary school without the luxury of food packs and how hard it
was to cope.
Imam urged them to look at the
positive side of the Motion and the impact it will have on enrolment
into the public primary school and the relief it will bring to the
parents and guardians.
Because the majority were in support of the motion, the House resolved to communicate the State government to that effect.
